"The Ladder" delves deep into themes of desperation and moral ambiguity, reflecting the stark reality of living in a society where basic needs have become symbols of wealth. The film takes a lot inspiration from Billy Wilder, Woody Allen, Ruben Ostlund, Bong Joon-Ho, and Jordan Peele. This film is not just a narrative about striving to 'keep up with the Joneses'; it’s a poignant exploration of what happens when the essentials are unattainable for the average person in the Capital. Drawing from personal experiences with insolvency and encounters with bailiffs in London, this film is crafted with a subtle touch, avoiding overt political messages despite the politically charged setting. Instead, it focuses on the emotional journey of a couple caught in these trying circumstances, much like Sightseers. Through dark humor and drama, "The Ladder" portrays their journey amidst a backdrop that quietly echoes larger societal issues, offering a fresh perspective on a harsh reality many face but few cinematic works address. The film seeks to engage the audience on both an emotional and intellectual level, inviting them to reflect on the lengths one might go to secure a semblance of stability in an increasingly indifferent world. This is a story is incredibly relatable and so important now with the state of the world. Whilst this is incredibly British this will travel as the world faces increasing bills and cost of living whilst trying to start a family.
